Allotments in East Cork
The meeting of the Cork Free Choice Consumer Group to discuss allotments, which took place last month, has begun to get the ball rolling.
It’s going to be slow to begin with, this change in the numbers of people growing their own in Ireland, and it’s easy to understand why those with land suitable for the purpose of allotments may be hesitant about taking the next step on to what is mostly unbroken ground.
Here’s a pdf, with a little more information, to fill in and return to the Barrys.
So, if you are interested in the idea of a little plot “between Carrigtwohill and Midleton”, please declare that interest to the Barrys. You can meet them at the Mahon Point Farmer’s Market on Thursday mornings, or give a call. This idea is just an idea at the moment, and feedback in the early stages may determine whether or not it ever becomes more. Comments, suggestions, and support in general are all very welcome.

So first question is what area are you in and do you know of any allotments around you, because allotments are a fairly new interest there is not that many of them available, not enough at the moment anyway.
I personally don’t know of may things you should be careful to, i guess meeting the owner and the people in the allotments prior to taking one is quite important, holding an allotment tends to be a fairly social activity as well as good exercise so making sure you’re landlord and neighbors are friendly or sociable is useful.
Otherwise it depends on your own requirements, do you need tools or will you have your own, do you need on site facilities such as changing rooms and showers? Not all allotments have the above.
I hope this was useful.
