Land Owners
Hello, on this page we will try and provide as much information as possible to help landowners setup their own allotments. If you think something is missing or is incorrect, please use the “contact us” page to let us know and we will do the necessary.
.
Is there interest:
To find out if there is interest for your allotments there are several things you can do:
- Put a notice in the local News paper, does not have to be anything big and fancy.
- Put up notices in your local shops.
- Start a blog (If you want to do this I am happy to set one up for free for you on GrowIreland.net)
- Join forums and post about you’re project (e.g. Irish Allotments Forums or/and Irish Gardeners Forums)
.
Land:
How much is required?
There is not really any set amount and it mostly depends on the demand. Most current succesful Allotments started with 10 to 20 plots in an area where there was room for expansion and added more based on the interest they received.
What type of land must it be?
The only hint I am able to give you here is make sure it’s quite flat and in a bright area.
Will I need to do anything to the land?
Some basic preparations are recommended, ploughing the land, building a fence around the allocated space and possibly around each plot. The fence does not need to be anything permanent as you may want or need to move it in the future.
.
Facilities:
What is required?
Only two things are really required, sufficient parking spaces and running water.
What is recommended?
Changing facilities are often appreciated, a shower as well since gardening can sometimes (or very often) be a messy job.
What would be a valuable addition?
Providing tools (a trowel, a rake, a shovel and more if you think it may be useful or necessary). A BBQ area with a couple of tables and chairs maybe, allotmenteers will often make a family day out to there plot in the summer and somewhere they can sit down, have a bit of food and relax will always be appreciated. A small kitchen with tea coffe making facilities (this is relying on the fact you have a building available to provide this.).
.
Cost:
How much should I charge?
The cost is entirely up to you but make sure to look at all your expenses to make sure you are not renting your land at a loss.
What are the maintenance costs I am likely to encounter?
Very little since the allotmenteers will be looking after the land the only thing you will need to worry about is keeping the facilities in a good condition.
.
Other:
Make sure to check with your insurance about public liability, this is very important.
