Hello..

I'm planning to do a photography project over the next few months that focuses on allotments. I'm really interested in documenting people working in their allotments and capturing their passion for growing food...

I'm not a professional photographer but am an experienced enthusiast so i'm not doing this to make money. But if the project turns out ok, id like to exhibit the photos some place.

I'd love to hear from anyone who wouldn't mind having me come out to their allotment some day and spend a couple of hours taking photographs. I'll even offer to do a spot of weeding!

Anyway if anyone is interested...my email is emmetsheerin@gmail.com

Cheers

My name is Stephen Gillman and I am a fourth year culinary arts student in DIT, I am doing a thesis on "How Allotments and Small Farms can save the Environment and Economy". This is a quick questionnaire (10questions) that I am using to find out more about the opinions of people growing in allotments that I could use to compare or contrast current literature that I have studied. I would be happy to answer any questions. Thanks for your time, it’s much appreciated

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a roll of windbreak fabric in the south county Dublin or North East Wicklow area?
I am also looking for wire mesh fencing or maybe it's ok to just use wooden posts and fabric. Any advice?
PS, please don't tell me a DIY shop as they only sell in small quantities and it is very expensive.
Thanks!

Well it's been a busy few months, the fruits of our labours are brilliant, the money which has been saved has been amazing. In Blackpool,(despite being depicted as less than enthusiastic at times)myself and the other volunteers have had a fantastic and very productive time, we had our share of problems, clueless so called experts, catterpillars, slugs and blight, but they are small and have been eliminated as far as possible, and considering that we are all(well some of us anyway)new to allotments, horticultural practices and comunal gardening, we have all gelled and been very productive, and we even made a few bob at a local market which just goes to show how easy when you put your mind to it, it can be. We successfuly turned a bare piece of neglected and barren land into a veritable vegetable oasis, there has been such a brilliant vibe around the place, even the chickens are happy, the harvesting is well under way now and we are eating our own organically grown produce, salads have never been tastier, what could be better eh? It's been a hard old slog, the irish summer hasn't been that kind to us though, I am looking forward to the next few months and the next series in september(24th)What a way to spend your time,it has been a very positive and rewarding experience,I would certainly encourage anyone to start digging there own garden and plant some food crops, It's great fun and You get to eat what you produce, how bad is that.

First GIY Ireland Conference Announced

GIY (Grow it Yourself) Ireland – taking the ‘self’ out of ‘self-sufficiency’

A new national not-for-profit organisation called GIY (Grow it Yourself) Ireland, which is trying to inspire people to grow their own food and give them the skills they need to do so successfully, is being launched on September 12 at the Waterford Harvest Festival.

The organisation, established by journalist and author Michael Kelly, aims to establish local food growers groups in every town in Ireland . Hundreds of people are already involved in existing GIY groups (GIY Waterford for example has over 100 members that meet each month in the city library) where activities include monthly meetings, talks and demos, garden visits, seed and plant swaps, produce bartering, mentor panels and grower’s meitheals. GIY meetings are free and open to people interested in food growing at all levels, i.e. from growing a few herbs on the balcony to complete self-sufficiency, from beginners to old hands.

“Growing your own food can be an isolating experience particularly when you are a novice and you don’t know where to start,” says Kelly. “A GIY group is about creating a grower’s community so that people can come together in their locality to learn from each other and exchange tips, knowledge, produce and war-stories! GIY Ireland is looking for local champions who are interested in setting up a GIY group in their area and we will give them all the help they need to get a sustainable, successful group up and running.”

Speakers at the GIY Ireland launch which takes place in Waterford Institute of Technology on Saturday September 12 will include Joy Larkcom, Trevor Sargent, Darina Allen, Michael Kelly and Will Sutherland. There will also be a demonstration on cooking with sustainable fish by Fresh From the Sea author Clodagh McKenna and talks on allotments, community gardens, nutrition, seed-saving and permaculture. Tickets which cost €35 include a seasonal dinner and are available to buy from www.GIYIreland.com

Other events at the Waterford Harvest Festival include a ‘Harvest Feast’ in the city on the Saturday evening and a farmer’s market in the city centre on Sunday 13, September. GIY Ireland is supported by Social Entrepreneurs Ireland.

Hi we have a site about 1 1/2 miles from Athenry that we would like to turn into allotments for use in spring 2010. We will prepare the soil and provide various itmes for use, it is a nice piece of land and very good soil, we live up the road and our land is of the same quality.
We will only go ahead with this if we get enough response as it is a big site, could accomadate 20 plots comfortably.
Please contact my husband p.heagney@hotmail.com for more information, i.e sizes and cost's.

hi there, I have a vague memory of last year Gardeners WOrld doing a feature on ways to combate slugs. They are attaching my sunflower seedlings among others things. They suggested I think laying down coffee grinds .. can anyone say they have used this method. I have a handy supply of grind from machine in work but where I am bit hazy was if you need to lay a wide path of it, or a deep amount. If it worked it would be a lot more pleasant in appearance and health than using the blue pellets.
* Anything else you can think of

I've decided to go and put some pressure on Fingal Co. Co. to make allotment available to us.
The reason i'm doing this is firstly I don't have enough room to grow much.....anything really, without my neighbours kids ball coming over the wall and flattening things, I'll save money, get loads of exercise , and hope to learn new things and meet new people. Community spirit come alive again maybe.
I attended a meeting last night in Swords ---County development plan......a miserable 17 people showed up
but with pressure on them, they have to and will supply them...all be it from 2011 - 2016 (the development plan is for these years)
So I'll be doing a door to door knock with a petition (for want of a better word) 5000 houses to be asked to add their name, if you want your name on the list you can email me at allotmentsfornorthcounty@hotmail.com
The county development plan meetings are next in Bracken court hotel, Balbriggan on 26th May 7-10pm and Portmarnock sports and leisure complex on May 28th 7-10pm......Please if you can go they need their arses kicked.
Thanks everyone

Donegal's first Green Gym has started running allotment plots in Donegal Town.

The idea behind the opportunity is that getting involved in gardening and conservation tasks, out in the fresh air and with an enthusiastic group of people, improves people's physical and mental health, as well as improving the local environment.

Development plans for the Green Gym at Allotments @ Ashtree Garden Centre include raised beds for use by people who experience difficulties reaching down, a polytunnel to extend the growing season, good wheelchair friendly pathways to provide access for all. In addition the project will offer many special events and training courses throughout the year.

Also the Green Gym provides a focal point for practical conservation tasks which will help people to deliver environmental improvements to the areas where they live.

Anonymous on ""Landshare" scheme for Ireland"

Picking up the baton from Channel 4 and the River Cottage series, I'd like to suggest the establishment of a similar "Landshare" initiative for Ireland - bringing together would-be vegetable gardeners who have no land with garden-owners who are prepared to share part of their garden.

Does anyone know of such a scheme already operating in Ireland? I've not found one and Channel 4 have declined to expand their own excellent initiative to allow registration of members from Ireland (it appears to be a postcode-driven system and therefore wouldn't work in Ireland). Take a look at http://landshare.channel4.com to get a better idea of how this might work. Transition Town Totnes in the UK is an example of an established, successful and independent scheme - see http://totnes.transitionnetwork.org/gardenshare/home

In an effort to kick things off here in Ireland, a Google Group has been established with the name "Landshare Ireland". The idea is that garden-owners or would-be growers join the group and post a new topic either seeking or offering garden space; connections are then made by searching and replying to topics. If all goes well, nearby garden-owners and growers meet, make a suitable arrangement between themselves and then both look forward to lots of home-grown fruit and vegetables!

Please note that the Landshare Ireland group is ONLY a means of introduction for interested members - it is not a general gardening or allotment discussion forum (this will be actively discouraged). I'd be happy in due course for one of the established gardening or allotment websites (perhaps the Irish Allotment Forum) to take up the Landshare Ireland initiative with a view to promoting it properly.

We will be a long time waiting for our local authorities to meet demand for allotments, particularly for those in the major urban centres. Landshare Ireland is a very simplistic approach to plugging the gap but could be very effective if publicised widely enough.

If you think Landshare Ireland might work for you as either a garden-owner or would-be grower, then please visit and join the group here:

http://groups.google.com/group/landshare-ireland

Please be patient - as a group starting out in mid-2009, we have a long way to go to build up numbers and gain some momentum. If you have friends, family and colleagues who would be interested in participating, please encourage them to join.

I hear South Dublin Allotment association ran a very successful seed distribution scheme for member this year. It appears that they were selling seed at 1 euro per pack and had a fairly comprehensive range plus seed potatoes at less than half the shop price.
