chili plant fate?

Hi - I'm fairly new to the gardening game and last year tried to grow some food in my apartment and on my balcony. One of the most successful things I grew were two chili plants which I grew from seed.

They have finished producing flowers and chilis now and are beginning to look a bit worse for wear. My understanding is that these types of plant are perennnials and need to be disposed of each year and grown again. Am I correct in thinking this? If so would it be a good idea to throw away the soil in the container too or to reuse?

  3. Hey I don't know about the chili plant but for the soil (based on recent advice received on what to do with my grow bags) I'd say you can re-use it if you make sure you mix it in with some compost, maybe use a bit of fertilizer with it since I'd say most of the nutrients are gone.

I managed to find a number of sites since the above post which suggest that with a bit of pruning and "overwintering", chilis in year two are possible.

    For example:

I think some fertilizer and maybe new compost may be in order though!
